Build and Conquer Production Chains: Find the Bottleneck
A practical input-output worksheet for factories and other production buildings. Trace shortages before adding more downstream capacity.
How do you identify the limiting step?
Start with the result you want: a resource, vehicle, or another manufactured output. Read the current panel of the structure that produces it. Record what it consumes and what it needs to operate. Do not assume a recipe from a different factory or an older version applies.
If an input is missing, investigate that input before spending on another copy of the final producer. More downstream capacity cannot fix an upstream shortage by itself. This is a general production-planning method, not a claim that every item follows one fixed chain.
What should your production worksheet contain?
| Field | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Objective | The output you want and how much you need |
| Producer | The exact building or manufacturing panel |
| Inputs | Each consumed resource listed in that panel |
| Operating conditions | Workers, power, or another stated requirement |
| Observed output | What the counter does over a known interval or cycle |
| Limiting step | The condition currently preventing the objective |
Use the building directory to find a family, then fill this worksheet from the live interface. Keep a before-and-after note when changing capacity so you can tell whether the investment actually helped.
Should you buy another factory or improve its support?
Compare the reason for the current shortfall with the effect of the next purchase. If the existing producer lacks a listed requirement, address that first. If it operates correctly but cannot keep up with your measured demand, another producer may be worth considering.
Before buying it, add the new construction costs to the budget planner. Operating requirements belong in a separate check: the construction calculator does not model production cycles, research unlocks, or resource consumption over time.
How can you test a change without losing track of it?
Change one part of the plan, observe the same counter for the same interval, and record the result. Keep other major purchases out of that comparison when possible. Otherwise, it becomes difficult to tell whether the new producer, more staffing, or an unrelated change explains the improvement.
The money guide describes a similar method for spending decisions. If the expected output never appears, work through troubleshooting rather than assuming a bigger building will solve it.
When does military production change the plan?
When it asks for resources or manufacturing capacity you are already using elsewhere. The developer’s description explicitly connects technology research, manufacturing, and military expansion. It does not provide a complete recipe table, so inspect the exact military item before redirecting an entire resource stream.
For a small preparation checklist, continue with defense and deployment.
