Several recorded building panels require placement within four studs of a road. The road tool shows left mouse to start a line and X to cancel.

What does “within four studs of a road” mean here?

The House, Substation, Shop, Oil Pump, High Rise City Apartment and Glass Apartment Tower panels inspected for this wiki each display a within 4 studs of a road condition. It is a placement requirement on those records. The sources do not prove whether the game measures from an object’s center or edge, so use the preview’s valid/invalid feedback instead of inventing a grid conversion.

Power must reach the substation before it can relay coverage; displayed road, upkeep and limit.

How do you test a road before filling a district?

  1. Open the road tool and choose the road type you intend to use. The October 12 menu includes Road, Empty Road and Four-Lane Road.
  2. Follow the displayed LMB start line prompt. X cancel is shown in the same road placement strip.
  3. Select one intended building near the line. Read the road-distance condition in its tooltip.
  4. Move the preview until the game accepts its position; place one copy before using repeated placement.
  5. Reserve room for utilities and the next road extension. A valid road connection does not establish power, water or staffing.

Why can a road-adjacent building still be blocked?

An Oil Pump separately asks for water, workers and energy. A Substation must receive power from an existing coverage circle before relaying it. A high-rise apartment can also be level-gated. Road access is only one field in these tooltips, and none of those other conditions disappears because the building is close to a road.

For a growing district, validate the largest selected footprint before committing to a dense row of smaller structures. This is layout advice; the screenshots do not establish a universal minimum lane width or traffic-capacity formula.

Where should you go next?
